Can I fly a drone on the island?

You must have a concession (permit) from DOC to fly a drone of any size on conservation land. This is to protect the local wildlife, respect Maori cultural values, and allow other to enjoy the outdoors.  Find out more.

How do we manage our rubbish?

We dispose of all food scraps for no charge.  We are able to dispose of rubbish on your behalf for an additional fee. We have a recycling station and encourage our clients to utilize this. There is still a cost for us to take your recycling away. This is because everything must leave the island via sea. Minimizing rubbish brought to site is encouraged and is another way to contribute to our clean and green environment.

Can we bring alcohol?

Our camp is not alcohol free and drinking is permitted at the discretion of each individual group. In the event that groups plan to consume alcohol then we recommend for health and safety reasons that this is carefully self-monitored. We discourage glass on site and promote cans where possible. Broken glass is hazardous in our environment and we pride ourselves on the safety of our clients.

Can I light a fire?

In our accommodation we have log burners as a source of heating and for safe roasting of marshmallows.  No other fires are permitted on the island.

Is there cellphone and wifi capabilities?

There is adequate cellphone reception that varies depending on your telecommunications provider. We do have WIFI capabilities for a small fee that is able to be organized during your stay.  Our guests can enjoy our audio visual room adjoining the museum and we have a projector and large AV screen in the gym. To arrange the use of these amenities please notify staff upon your arrival.

How many people can a Troop Vehicle Carry?

Our troop vehicles may carry up to 9 passengers. In the event that you would like to book additional transport during your stay it is recommended that you preplan and request this in advance to ensure that we can meet your needs.

How do I call for assistance?

Our site is manned 24/7. In the event you need assistance our on-call phone number is 027 233 3056. This phone number is located on our emergency plans in every building.  Alternatively, our Operations Manager is also available on 027 317 2207.    

How can I find out about the island walking tracks?

There are maps of the island on our website that you are free to download and refer to. We are always happy to co-construct a plan with our clients to meet your needs. We welcome all enquiries.

Do we need to purchase a cleaning pack?

As a self-clean camp we highly recommend that you purchase one of our cleaning packs. Our cleaning packs are environmentally friendly and as the containers are reusable this is one way that you may contribute to reducing rubbish and plastic waste.

How soon do we need to confirm our ferry timings?

We need this information at least two weeks in advance of your stay. Remaining Pest Free is extremely important to us and we provide this information to the DoC Bio Security Team who carry out inspections. It is important that they are made aware of your visit well in advance so that they can plan accordingly.

How do we book activities?

Our Senior Instructors are only too happy to co-construct a programme to meet your needs. There are a variety of both instructor led and self led activities on site. To make enquiries please email our senior instructor.

What happens if we book an activity and there is bad weather?

 Our team of highly skilled instructors monitor weather and will advise if conditions are not safe to proceed with your planned activity. In this instance alternative activities will be organized with you and our h instructors will present these options on the day.
